Cops: Man arrested after body parts found near train tracks

HIALEAH, Fla. -- Authorities say a South Florida man killed and dismembered another man before dumping some of the victim's remains in garbage bags along tracks where a train scattered them.

Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby told local news outlets that police on Thursday arrested 40-year-old William Martinez, adding he faces charges of second-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

Officials said they arrested Martinez at an apartment he shares with his mother.

Officials say Martinez got into an argument with the 60-year-old victim before killing him and dismembering the body. Police say Martinez put some remains inside garbage bags and placed them near train tracks in Hialeah. Authorities said the remains were discovered Wednesday night after a passing train scattered the remains around the tracks.

According to the arrest affidavit, surveillance video from a nearby business has footage of a man walking from a nearby apartment complex, towards the tracks and throwing an object on the tracks, according to CBS Miami.

When police went to the nearby apartment complex to investigate, they reportedly spotted Martinez sitting in a chair outside and his mother cleaning the apartment. The affidavit also states that there was "a strong stench consistent with that of a decomposed body."

They also found the same kind of garbage bag used to dump the body parts near his apartment, according to the document. Their search also discovered "a [barbecue] with a strong smell of a decomposing body emanating from within."

Martinez' mother allegedly said her son told her he killed the victim, dismembered his body, and stored his body parts inside her barbecue and garbage tank, according to the affifidavit.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.
