58 arrested in 2nd night of Ferguson-area protests

More violence in Ferguson despite National Guard presence

FERGUSON, Mo. -- Authorities have raised the arrest total from the second night of protests over the grand jury decision in the Michael Brown case to 58.

St. Louis County police said early Wednesday that 45 people were arrested overnight in Ferguson, which was much calmer than during the first night of protests in which several businesses and vehicles were burned to the ground. Police arrested seven of those people on felony charges, including four for allegedly assaulting an officer and three for armed criminal action.

Authorities say 13 other people were arrested at a protest in St. Louis on Tuesday night, including one on a felony charge of assaulting an officer.

Ferguson business owners devastated by destruction

Capt. Ron Johnson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol told CBS News correspondent Vladimir Duthiers that the actions of some have been counterproductive.

"Change doesn't come because of destruction," Johnson said. "You wake up this morning and what has changed? What has changed is that a community is ruined."

The grand jury on Monday declined to indict Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson for killing Brown, who was unarmed.

Meanwhile, protesters upset by the grand jury decision halted traffic on the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.

CBS Los Angeles reports that the group of about 15-20 people stopped vehicles around 9 a.m. near Alvarado Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two lanes were reopened by 9:40 a.m.

The LAPD was on scene to assist the CHP.

Dozens of protesters shut down the 101 Freeway at Grand Avenue Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, seven people were arrested while blocking some downtown Dallas roads to protest the Ferguson grand jury decision.

Dallas police said nobody was hurt in the demonstrations that ended early Wednesday.

A police statement said protests that began Tuesday night were mainly peaceful. Interstate 35 in downtown Dallas was briefly closed in both directions when some demonstrators walked on the highway.
