FBI offers reward for info on suspects in N.C. kidnapping case
RALEIGH, N.C. - The FBI has offered a $25,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that helps lead to the arrest of two additional suspects in the abduction case of a Wake County, N.C. man, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.
Federal officers are looking for Jakym "Jak" Camel Tibbs, 20, and Quantavious Thompson, who is either 18 or 19 years old, according to the station. Authorities on Wednesday said that both men were charged with conspiracy to kidnap in the April 5 abduction of Frank Janssen.
Janssen, 63, was kidnapped from his Wake Forest home and rescued April 9 in a southeast Atlanta apartment following an FBI raid, WRAL reports. Six other suspects are in custody and are facing federal charges in the case.
Special agent in charge of the FBI John Strong said last Thursday that the suspects who currently in custody sent demands to Janssen's family on behalf of a man named Kelvin Melton, who is in prison serving a life sentence. Melton, 49, had been prosecuted by Janssen's daughter, an assistant district attorney, WRAL reports.
Melton was convicted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury on Oct. 17, 2012, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. He is held under maximum security at the Polk Correctional Institution in Butner, N.C.
Criminal complaints against Tibbs and Thompson accuse the pair of using a stun gun on the victim when he answered the door of his home and then taking him to Atlanta, where the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team freed him just before midnight on April 9, according to court documents obtained by the station.
The complaints also alleged that the kidnappers stopped at a McDonald's in Lexington, S.C., on their way to commit the crime and that a receipt from the restaurant was later found on the floor at Janssen's home, where it was apparently dropped during the assault.
Authorities later recovered security camera footage showing the two suspects at the fast-food restaurant.
Police said that both Tibbs and Thompson should be considered armed and dangerous. Their whereabouts are unknown. The station reports that Thompson - previously identified by his nickname, "Kirkwood Quan" - is 5-foot-8 and weighs between 190 and 210 pounds. Tibbs is reportedly 5-foot-7 and weighs between 155 and 165 pounds.
