European Parliament member holds "he's lying to you" sign behind U.K. pol Nigel Farage

A member of the European Parliament had a message for people watching Nigel Farage speak on Wednesday: “He’s lying to you.”

Video showed that Farage, a British politician and former U.K. Independence Party leader, was speaking in the European Parliament in support of U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions during his first days in office. Reports say he was praising Mr. Trump’s travel ban, which temporarily bars nationals from seven countries with Muslim majorities from traveling to the U.S.

Seb Dance, a Labour member of the European Parliament who represents London, held the hand-written sign as Farage spoke.

“Mainstream politics must be more willing to challenge the nationalists and the populists,” Dance said in a statement explaining why he held the sign. “They pretend to stand up for people who are suffering but their diet of hate, division and suspicion create only misery and poverty. It’s time to stop the nuanced language: They’re liars.”

“Nigel Farage is regularly treated to free coverage by virtue of being leader of the EFDD [UKIP’s European Parliamentary group] and UKIP often use these clips in isolation on social media,” Dance said. “When debates are time-limited it is impossible to challenge what he’s saying, so I protested in the only way I knew how at that point, which was to grab a piece of paper, write a very simple message on it and sit behind Nigel Farage during his usual diatribe.”
