Escaped monkey captured at Memphis Zoo
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A small, "extremely spirited" monkey that escaped its enclosure at the Memphis Zoo has been captured.
After an "all-zoo effort" to locate her, workers spotted Zimm, a three-year-old macaque, inside a drainage system on the eastern side of the zoo Saturday morning.
"The key strategy here was patience," Director of Animal Programs Matt Thompson said in a statement. "Zimm had a very big day yesterday, and she's safe and secure now. I'd like to thank our staff for their dedication and hard work, and the continued support we received from the community."
After Zimm escaped from her enclosure Thursday, she found shelter in drainage pipes underneath the zoo. Staff went section by section looking in manholes and using cameras in their search for the missing monkey, according to CBS affiliate WREG-TV.
"She's an extremely spirited, athletic animal," Thompson said. "This is a very rare occurrence."
Zimm was being examined by the veterinarian staff, and will have a brief stay in the zoo's hospital before returning to her enclosure.
The zoo plans to investigate exactly how Zimm was able to get out of her enclosure.
The monkey's escape resulted in a Twitter account that racked up more than 1,500 followers.
