Mystery "incident" sickens dozens of U.K. school kids

NORTH YORKSHIRE, England -- More than two dozen school children collapsed or became ill Wednesday at a small high school in northern England, with at least two being taken to hospital as hazardous materials crews arrived to try and figure out what happened.

The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call around lunchtime reporting a number of pupils feeling ill at the Outwood Academy in Ripon, about 240 miles north of London.

"A specialist detection, identification and monitoring (DIM) team from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is also at the incident," the service said in a statement.

The fire service said about 27 students were affected, displaying "signs of sickness and feeling faint," but most were treated at the scene.

CBS News partner network Sky News reported the students fell ill during an assembly for Rememberance Day, the European equivalent of Veterans Day.

The only children hospitalized were reportedly released in good condition, and health workers said no apparent maladies could be detected.

There was no immediate indication from the authorities what might have caused the children to become ill, and the crews at the scene were still trying to figure it out.
