Elton John launches YouTube competition for videos of his '70s hits

If you’ve always wished you could direct a music video for an Elton John classic, now is your chance.

The celebrated singer has teamed up with YouTube for “Elton John: The Cut,” a global search for new directing talent to make new music videos for three of his classics.

Entrants will be competing for a chance to helm videos for “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man” and “Bennie and the Jets.”

“We’re excited to partner with YouTube to bring together generations of artists and music lovers around a shared passion for storytelling,” John said in a statement. “YouTube is a rich tapestry of creativity, and I can’t wait to see how the breadth of talent from the dance, live-action and animation communities apply their vision to these cherished songs.”

John, songwriting partner Bernie Taupin and a panel of YouTube creators and music industry luminaries will select the winners, and the new videos will premiere on YouTube next summer.

“Rocket Man” will feature animation, while “Tiny Dancer” will be live-action and “Bennie and the Jets” will focus on choreography. The contest launched Monday and becomes open to public entries Jan. 9, 2017. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 23.
