Pilot dead after small plane crashes in church parking lot

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The pilot of a small plane has died after it crashed in a church parking lot southwest of Minneapolis, authorities say. 

Law enforcement says the plane had just taken off from the Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie when it went down about 11 a.m. Wednesday, killing the only person on board.

The crash happened north of Highway 212 outside the Resurrection Life Church.

CBS Minnesota reports police were notified around 11 a.m. of an in-flight aircraft reporting a fire on board. Police and fire personnel responded to the crash, which was located north of Flying Cloud Airport.

A spokesperson with the city said the pilot was killed in the crash. The pilot has not been identified.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
