Ed Sheeran is Spotify's most-streamed artist of the year

Ed Sheeran is this year's Spotify king.

According to the streaming site, more than 50 million users listened to seven billion hours of music and created over 733 million playlists this year. But out of the chaos, a winner has emerged.

Sheeran is 2014's most-streamed artist, with 860 million listens across the globe. The British singer also holds the title for the most-streamed album for "x," which listeners have enjoyed more than 430 million times since its June release.

Sheeran told Spotify, "It's a great thing to be above so many amazing artists who I'd assume would be streamed more than me!"

Spotify also saw a coup for most-streamed female (no, not Taylor Swift).

Katy Perry unseated Rihanna, a title the Barbados singer has held for the last two years. Perry's ubiquitous track "Dark Horse" spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on Spotify's U.S. Top 50 chart, the longest run in the top spot this year.

For most-streamed track, we turn to Pharrel Williams. His anthem "Happy" had more than 260 million plays.

And for most viral track: Hozier's "Take Me to Church." The song spent 47 weeks on the site's viral charts.

Hozier said in Spotify's press release, "Thank you so much to my fans for listening to the music and sharing it with people. Spotify was a big part of getting the music across the world as quickly as it did and as a new artist, that's invaluable. So thank you for listening and thank you for sharing with your friends."
