Big earthquake rattles El Salvador

NEW YORK -- The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude 7.3 underwater earthquake has struck off the coast of El Salvador.

The quake, whose epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about 108 miles southeast of San Salvador, occurred at 11:51 Eastern on Monday. The U.S. G.S. measured its depth at about 25 miles.

Local reports indicated the quake was felt throughout Central America, and officials in El Salvador reported one death from falling debris, but the Red Cross in El Salvador and Costa Rica, the two countries closest to the epicenter, had no reports of victims.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning center told CBS News there was a low-level threat of tsunami, but no waves were reported.

Along with a smaller offshore quake, it shook the southern coast and interior of the region from Guatemala to Costa Rica, according local reports.
