Drone strike targets an al-Shabab leader

The U.S. military released a statement saying it had conducted an airstrike in Somalia targeting the al-Shabab network, a terrorist group which is trying to establish an Islamic state in Somalia. CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports that the drone strike targeted al-Shabab's chief of intelligence.

The Pentagon says the "strike took place in the vicinity of Saakow, Somalia," and said that while the military is still assessing the outcome of the operation, officials do not believe there are any civilian or bystander casualties. There is also, however, still no confirmation that the chief of intelligence was killed in the strike.

Last week, al-Shabab's former chief of intelligence, Zakariya Ismail Ahmed Hersi, a leader with a $3 million bounty on his head, turned himself in, according to the Associated Press, which suggested he may have surrendered because he had had a falling out with insurgents loyal to al-Shabab's top leader Ahmed Abdi Godane, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike earlier this year.
