Democrats to hold 2016 convention in Philadelphia

The Democratic Party has decided to hold its 2016 presidential nominating convention in Philadelphia.

"In addition to their commitment to a seamless and safe convention, Philadelphia's deep rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering," DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement. "I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee."

The Democratic National Committee chose Philadelphia over two other cities in contention, New York City and Columbus, Ohio. The committee evaluated cities on factors such as hotel capacity, transportation, security, financing and logistics. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement that the city has a "proven track record of hosting big events safely and efficiently."

The convention will take place the week of July 25, 2016.

The Republican Party is slated to hold its nominating convention a week earlier in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2012, Democrats held their nominating convention in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Republicans held theirs in Tampa, Florida.
