Execution set in Missouri Tuesday for 14-year-old murder
ST. LOUIS, Mo. --The execution of David Zink, 55, is scheduled for Tuesday night in Bonne Terre, Mo., for the 2001 rape and murder of a teenage girl in western Missouri, reports CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOX.
Just five months after he had finished a 20-year sentence in Texas for abduction, Zink rear-ended 19-year-old Amanda Morton's car, which authorities later found with the lights on and engine running, according to the station.
In a taped confession, Zink told police he didn't want to go back to prison, reports KMOX.
"I said, 'I'm going to have to kill you,'" Zink said. "She asked 'Why?' and I said 'Because you know my name. If I think you are going to pose a threat to my freedom, I'm going to eliminate you.'"
Zink said he took her to a remote cemetery near the woods.
"I tied her hands behind her back, tied her to a tree and broke her neck." Zink said.
He then buried her in a shallow grave. Authorities caught up with him at his home.
His requests for last minute appeals have not been successful.
Zink is set to be executed at 5:59 p.m. at the correctional facility in Bonne Terre.
