Cousins arrested in murder of North Carolina man
HAVELOCK, N.C. -- Two cousins have been arrested and a third is on the run after a shootout Tuesday morning in Havelock, N.C., reports CBS affiliate WCTI.
"It was just an ugly scene," in the parking lot of the Havelock Inn & Suites, said the town's police chief, David Magnusson.
James Walter Godette, of Morehead City, N.C., was visiting a friend at the motel before he was killed, police said.
Magnusson said the gun battle began soon after the three alleged assailants pulled their car into the motel's parking lot.
"They get to one side of the car, almost like they're using the car as a defensive-type of shield," Magnusson said.
Magnusson said as Godette came down a flight of outdoor stairs, the shooting began. All four men were armed, and bullets were flying, Magnusson said. Godette was killed at the scene.
The motel is not far from the local police station, and officers heard the gunfire and were on the scene within a minute, Magnusson said.
Tornez Hargett, 34, of New Bern, N.C., was arrested at the scene of the crime. Police say his cousin, Anthony Hargett, 42, of Havelock, N.C., was arrested later Tuesday afternoon after he received medical treatment for a gunshot wound to his wrist area.
Tornez Hargett made a first court appearance Tuesday morning and is currently in the Craven County Jail on a first degree murder charge. Anthony Hargett faces the same charge.
Police say a third suspect is still on the run.
