Couple killed on North Carolina train tracks

DURHAM, N.C. -- Police say an Amtrak train struck and killed a husband and wife who were on the tracks in North Carolina.

Authorities say 38-year-old Derek Lowe and 33-year-old Tina Lowe were hit by a northbound train shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday in Durham. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said train No. 80, the Carolinian, was headed from Charlotte to New York City when the two were hit on property owned by Norfolk-Southern. He says the train continued on its route after a delay of about two hours and 45 minutes.

Investigators said it appears one person was sitting on the tracks and the other was trying to pull them off, according to CBS News affiliate WRAL.

Amtrak said the Carolinian left Charlotte at 7 a.m., headed toward New York. It was on its way to Raleigh when the accident occurred.

Authorities say none of the 166 passengers on the train was injured.

Durham is located about 25 miles northwest of Raleigh.
