New charges in Calif. rampage that killed two cops

SACRAMENTO -- New charges were filed Wednesday against a husband and wife accused in a crime spree that left two California deputies dead, CBS Sacramento reports.

Luis Enrique Monroy-Bracamonte and Janelle Marquez Monroy were already charged Tuesday with murder in the Oct. 24 rampage, which included six crimes scenes spread across 30 miles. New charges added Wednesday include attempted murder against several other deputies, and stealing a deputy's shotgun.

Monroy-Bracamonte was originally booked into jail under the pseudonym Marcelo Marquez.

He and Janelle Monroy did not enter pleas, and told the judge they could not afford attorneys.

Placer County Sheriff's Det. Michael Davis and Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver were killed in the attacks, which also left another deputy and a bystander wounded.

The duo evaded police in Northern California for hours last Friday, allegedly attempting several carjackings throughout the day.

The long manhunt involved hundreds of officers from multiple agencies backed by search dogs, helicopters and armored vehicles. Residents nearby were told to stay indoors, and schools were locked down during the search.

Monroy-Bracamonte also faces new charges for allegedly taking a Placer County deputy's car and one of the authorities' 12-gauge shotguns.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones says the couple will be moved out of the county jail soon.

"I would just as soon our officers and our professional staff not have to look at these two suspects during their criminal trials," Scott said.

Both defendants are facing the death penalty.
