Cops search for man suspected of stabbing professor 30 times

GILL, Mass. -- State police have expanded their search for a man suspected of stabbing a Massachusetts college professor more than 30 times before she died.

Troopers returned to the Connecticut River on Monday to search for 24-year-old Tyler Hagmaier. He's a suspect in the slaying of Quincy College professor Vibeke Rasmussen.

The 76-year-old Rasmussen was found dead Friday afternoon in her Plymouth apartment by officers responding to a well-being check. Hagmaier lived across the hall.

Officials say Hagmaier's car was discovered near the French King Bridge in Gill, and witnesses reported hearing a splash at around 10 p.m. Friday.

State police spokesman David Procopio says investigators are unsure if Hagmaier is "alive and attempting to evade capture" or dead.

The investigation into Rasmussen's death and the search for Hagmaier are ongoing.
