Cops: Man flees traffic stop, leaves infants in car
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - A man is accused of bolting from his car following a traffic stop in Florida -- leaving two infants behind -- and barricading himself in a home until a SWAT team was able to take him into custody, reports CBS Miami.
"The suspect in this case decided not to comply with the traffic stop. He decided to jam his car into park. He fled from the vehicle immediately. He ran a couple blocks to his home," Gina Carter with the Broward Sheriff's Office told the station.
When deputies looked in the man's car, they found two children inside -- a 4-month-old and a 1-year-old.
"The 4-month-old was actually discovered underneath the driver's seat," Carter said.
Police said the children were not injured but were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The man -- Ricardo Ilus -- who was wanted on two felony warrants and who police said is considered dangerous, was taken into custody Monday at around 11 a.m. According to CBS Miami, he faces charges of child neglect, aggravated assault on an officer, resisting with violence, fleeing, child car seat violations and several traffic violations.
A woman, who did not want to be identified but said she's related to Ilus, told the station she's in disbelief over the news, saying, "He's the best father in the world."
The Broward Sheriff's Office offered a different picture.
Carter said Ilus has a history of fleeing from police and has been arrested before for cocaine possession, aggravated assault and domestic violence.
