Cops: Man drove 100 mph near where fatal accident occurred

BOSTON - A Boston University student has been charged with driving 100 miles per hour near the Boston street were two pedestrians were struck and killed earlier this year, reports CBS Boston.

Police say Zeguang Xu, 19, of Boston, was speeding down Beacon Street at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday in his blue Maserati GranTurismo. It was raining and the roads were wet in the 30 mile-per-hour zone, police said.

Authorities said Xu and a female passenger drove through a red light at the intersection where Jessica Campbell and Jack Lanzillotti were killed in June when another driver allegedly ran the same red light, reports the station.

"High speeds, poor driving conditions - this could have been a recipe for disaster," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement. "We're very fortunate no one was hurt, including the driver himself."

Police say Xu gave the name and date of birth of someone else after he was stopped. They also say he told officers that the vehicle was his friend's, and that he left his wallet and driver's license at home. Police said they were able to determine that the car did belong to Xu, who did not have a license but did produce a Boston University ID.

Officers arrested Xu and his female passenger drove the Maserati home.

A Boston University spokesman said Xu will likely be called in to a judicial affairs hearing by the school, reports the station.

Xu was arraigned Thursday on charges of operating without a license, providing a false name to police, speeding, failure to stop and negligent operation.
