Cops: Colo. mom who left kids in hot car was at tanning salon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado Springs mother was ticketed after allegedly leaving her children inside a hot SUV Tuesday while she went to a tanning salon, reports CBS Denver.

The children -- ages eight, ten, and 18 months -- were reportedly screaming for help as temperatures climbed to 85 degrees. Someone heard the children and called the police, the station reported.

Officers said they found the mother nine minutes after responding to the scene, and that she told them she'd been at a tanning salon.

"This can be a life-threatening event," Lt. Howard Black with Colorado Springs police told the station. "When we have temperatures just in the upper 70s, it is possible that we're talking about a life-saving event in getting that child out of that vehicle."

The 33-year-old woman was ticketed for misdemeanor child abuse.
