Cops: Boy, 14, fatally shoots man on NYC bus

NEW YORK - New York police say a 14-year-old boy opened fire on a city bus in Brooklyn Thursday evening, fatally shooting a male passenger in the head.

CBS New York reports that the victim was 39-year-old Angel Rojas of Brooklyn. He was initially reported in critical condition at Woodhull Medical Center Thursday night, but police told the station that he later died. The shooting happened at about 6:20 p.m. on a bus in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

"There was a lot of blood everywhere, and I saw the patient leaning against the window of the bus, holding his neck because of the injury," said Woodlyn Fenelus of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps. "He was still alive."

The boy was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. No charges were immediately filed. Police said the boy boarded the bus with the intention of shooting someone, but Rojas was not the intended target, according to CBS New York.

According to The New York Times, the shooting erupted during an argument among a group of teenagers. The newspaper reports that more than one shot was fired.

"There were a lot of rounds, a lot of blood, you know, a lot of people running and screaming," Nigel Phillips, also of the Volunteer Ambulance Corps, told CBS New York. "Actually, only one round hit the patient."

"I work right here in the supermarket. There was four or five shots," a man named Harold, who works nearby where the incident occurred, told the station. "It sounded like a cannon - like somebody just came out here and let off an old, ancient cannon."

Relatives say Rojas came to the United States four years ago from the Dominican Republic with his wife and two children.

CBS New York reports that the witness was questioned Thursday night. There has been no word on a possible motive.
