College police chief's loaded gun, diamond ring stolen from car

RICHMOND, Calif. -- The chief of the University of California at Berkeley Police Department had her badge, department-issued gun, official laptop and other items stolen from her car, reports CBS San Francisco.

Chief Margo Bennett's gun was loaded at the time of the theft, according to police. In addition to the police equipment, also stolen were a diamond ring, an iPad, and a cellphone.

The burglary was reported at 8:17 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21. Authorities said Bennett had gone for a jog at the Point Isabel Regional Shoreline in Richmond, about five miles from campus, and returned to find a rear window of her unmarked police car smashed.

CBS San Francisco reports that burglaries are common at East Bay shoreline parks like the one where Bennett was, because easy access from a nearby freeway lets thieves get in and out of parking lots quickly.
