Colin Firth to join Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep in the “Mary Poppins” sequel
Another familiar face will be helping bring Mary Poppins back to the big screen, as Colin Firth is reportedly in negotiations to co-star with Emily Blunt in the upcoming “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Firth will star as William Weatherall Wilkins, the president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, according to Variety.
The film -- set 25 years after the events of the original, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke -- will also star “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as a lamplighter named Jack, Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin and Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as the grown-up children from the first film.
Rob Marshall is directing. He previously worked with Blunt and Streep together on “Into the Woods.”
Firth definitely seems to be OK with the idea of doing sequels, as his “Bridget Jones’s Baby” hit theaters last month, and he recently completed filming “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” He’ll next be seen on the big screen in “Loving.”
“Mary Poppins Returns” will be released on December 25, 2018.
