Clinton talks GOP, her birthday with Stephen Colbert

NEW YORK -- When Hillary Clinton sat for her first interview with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, Colbert asked her about the two Republican frontrunners in the race: Ben Carson and Donald Trump.

Colbert asked: "You can picture either one of them in the office, right?"

"Well," Clinton said, "I can picture them in some office."

Clinton wouldn't say which of the Republican candidate she would like to run against, saying she would leave the choice "to Republicans."

"If I am fortunate enough to be the nominee, I want to run hard against whichever Republican is up there," she said.

Clinton was the fifth presidential candidate to appear on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," and the appearance marked her third stop on the late-night television circuit this cycle. She previously appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" and portrayed a bartender named "Val" opposite Kate McKinnon, who played Clinton, on "Saturday Night Live."

"My first visit to the cathedral of Colbert," Clinton joked as Colbert welcomed her to the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Clinton also talked about her 68th birthday, which was on Monday. She celebrated the occasion with a star-studded, 1,400-person fundraiser at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday night featuring performances by John Legend, Demi Lovato and Tony Bennett, who surprised guests with a rendition of "Happy Birthday."

Clinton told Colbert that she spent Monday with her family and that she "slept late," which was "pretty celebratory" for her.

"Bill and I just kind of watched bad TV," she said, quickly adding that her line-up didn't include Colbert's show.
