Chance the Rapper leads hundreds to early voting site in Chicago
CHICAGO — Chance the Rapper encouraged concert attendees Monday to exercise their right to vote before leading hundreds of people to an early-voting site in Chicago, CBS Chicago reported.
Chance held a free concert in the city at Grant Park, followed by a “parade to the polls.” Chance and other entertainers performed Monday afternoon at Petrillo Music Shell. The event sponsored by his nonprofit group Social Works was geared toward millennial voters, who have been crucial in recent elections.
The crowds of people came through the downtown to Dearborn and Washington streets. Chicago police monitored the group, but no disturbances were reported.
Social media was flooded with image and video of the crowd led by Chance, many using the hashtag #StayWokeAndVote.
Chance went inside the early-voting site and cast his ballot, CBS Chicago reported. He has previously voiced his support for Hillary Clinton.
Lines had been long all day Monday. Officials said anyone in line by 7 p.m. local time would be allowed to vote.
Illinois’ State Board of Elections says nearly 1.3 million people cast in-person early ballots through Sunday, surpassing turnout in previous presidential contests.
