"Mad Max: Fury Road" to screen at Cannes Film Festival

The new "Mad Max" film is taking the road to Cannes.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" will be screened out of competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, organizers announced Wednesday.

The Warner Bros. sequel will be shown at the festival on May 14, one day before it's unleashed in theaters.

"Fury Road" comes 30 years after the post-apocalyptic franchise last hit the big screen, with Tom Hardy succeeding Mel Gibson in the role of road warrior Max Rockatansky.

Gibson starred in the original "Mad Max" (1979) and its sequels, "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" (1981) and "Max Max: Beyond Thunderdome " (1985).

George Miller, who directed the first three films, returned to helm "Fury Road." The film also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

The Cannes Film Festival runs this year from May 13-24.
