Selfie Patrol: Trying to stop photo seekers from climbing Calif. bridge

AUBURN, Calif. -- More than 30 people were arrested last weekend in what's becoming a dangerous trend: scaling Northern California's Foresthill Bridge to take selfies, reports CBS Sacramento.

Sheriff's officials say they think more and more teens are hopping fences and climbing the bridge, the fourth-highest in the U.S., because they've seen photos and videos posted on Instagram and other social media sites of others doing the same.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department says the problem has gotten so bad, they are planning extra patrols to watch out for daredevils. Sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Irwin says the department is hoping to curb the dangerous trend.

"What people need to understand is there is zero chance for survival; it's 730 feet," Irwin said. "The wind just funnels through here, it's extremely dangerous, there is nothing about being under that bridge which is safe."

The county public works department is also looking at better ways to secure the bridge, including barbed wire where there is easy entry.
