California man allegedly stabs police K9
FULLERTON, Calif.-- A California man stabbed allegedly stabbed a police dog early Wednesday, before being shot by police, reports CBS Los Angeles.
Police officers in Fullerton, Calif., received a report of a man brandishing a weapon around 1 a.m., and upon their arrival, encountered the suspect, identified as Jimmy Lastra, 42, of Artesia, allegedly armed with a knife.
Fullerton Sgt. Kathryn Hamel said Lastra repeatedly refused to drop the knife, so police shot sponge rounds, a type of non-lethal bullet, at him. Police say they then released Rotar, a K9, who was allegedly stabbed by Lastra.
Police say when the dog was stabbed, an officer opened fire shooting Lastra in his upper torso. Paramedics transported him to a local trauma center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Rotar, a 3.5-year-old Golden Shepherd, was treated for minor stab wounds at Yorba Regional Animal Hospital. He is expected to return to work in about a week, police said.
No officers sustained injuries during the shooting.
Lastra has an outstanding warrant for his arrest for assault and battery. He is facing several charges related to this incident.
