California car chase suspect ditches cops in sewer tunnel
Deputies in Southern California have suspended their search for a suspect in a car chase Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect led police on a high speed chase through inland freeways near Diamond Bar, Calif., but managed to escape into a sewer, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The pursuit began around 12:20 p.m. on the northbound 57 Freeway in Diamond Bar, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said. The suspect was driving erratically and weaving around cars.
The driver sped down at least four freeways during the half-hour pursuit, colliding with several vehicles. It was unclear if anyone was injured.
The vehicle began off-roading, driving through dusty gravel along some train tracks. Around 12:50 p.m., the suspect stopped the vehicle and took off on foot.
The man approached an underground sewer tunnel entrance near the tracks and appeared to run inside. Deputies set up a perimeter and guarded the tunnel entrance with guns raised, in addition to raising manhole covers nearby.
By 5 p.m., authorities cleared the area and suspended the search.
