Wednesday kicks off the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, with a focus this year on the Basque culture of Spain and France, and the multiple cultures of California.

Thursday marks the start of RIMPAC 2016, a weeks-long naval exercise in the Pacific involving ships and personnel from the United States and 26 other countries.
