Bruce Springsteen rips into Donald Trump
Rock legend Bruce Springsteen doesn’t have many warm, fuzzy feelings about Donald Trump.
In a Rolling Stone magazine interview published earlier this week, Springsteen went on a lengthy tear about why he didn’t believe the GOP nominee was “born to run.”
“Well, you know, the republic is under siege by a moron, basically,” Springsteen said when asked for his opinions about Trump. “The whole thing is tragic. Without overstating it, it’s a tragedy for our democracy.”
The musician pointed to Trump’s charges of “rigged” elections as one threat to the democratic process.
“When you start talking about elections being rigged, you’re pushing people beyond democratic governance,” he said. “And it’s a very, very dangerous thing to do. Once you let those genies out of the bottle, they don’t go back in so easy, if they go back in at all.”
Springsteen went on to slam the rise of the so-called alt-right philosophical movement and its ties to the Trump campaign.
“The ideas he’s moving to the mainstream are all very dangerous ideas – white nationalism and the alt-right movement,” he said. “The outrageous things that he’s done – not immediately disavowing David Duke? These are things that are obviously beyond the pale for any previous political candidate.”
Trump, who once claimed he didn’t know enough about former KKK leader David Duke to condemn him, has since disavowed the controversial white nationalist.
Asked if he intended to make more political waves with his fame, Springsteen said, “I think you have a limited amount of impact as an entertainer, performer or musician...I don’t think people go to musicians for their political points of view. I think your political point of view is circumstances and then how you were nurtured and brought up. But it’s worth giving a shot when it’s the only thing you have.”
When asked about Trump’s rival, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Springsteen said, “I like Hillary.”
“I think she would be a very, very good president,” he added.
