Boy, 11, charged with murder in Tennessee 8-year-old's death

WHITE PINE, Tenn. -- An 11-year-old boy has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of an 8-year-old girl who lived next door to him, reports CBS affiliate WVLT.

Neighbors told WVLT that McKayla Dyer was shot and killed after arguing with the suspect about a puppy. Detectives said they found a 12-gauge shotgun and BB pistol at the scene where Dyer suffered a wound to the chest.

Neighbor Chasity Arwood said the little boy was inside his home when he allegedly shot the girl, who was outside. Arwood said the boy asked from an open window if he could see the victim's puppy. When the girl laughed and said "no," the suspect allegedly shot her.

Moments later, she had been shot, according to Arwood. The Jefferson County Sheriff's office said the shotgun belongs to the 11-year-old's father.

The juvenile is scheduled for a Monday court appearance, but because he is a minor, the doors are closed to the public.
