Boston Public Library looking for missing Old Master artworks

BOSTON - The Boston Public Library is looking for two valuable Old Master artworks missing from its extensive print collection.

The library's president is hoping the pieces, worth more than $600,000, were just misplaced.

"We recently discovered that an engraving by Albrecht Dürer and an etching by Rembrandt are missing from the Boston Public Library's print collection," Amy Ryan, President of the Boston Public Library said Tuesday, according to CBS Boston. "It is our hope that these two significant pieces have simply been misfiled."

The pieces were reported missing last month. The library is currently undertaking an updated inventory of the more than 200,000 prints and drawings that make up the print collection.

Police value the missing 8-by-11-inch Albrecht Durer from 1504 titled, "Adam and Eve," at about $600,000. The 5-by-6-inch 1634 Rembrandt self-portrait is valued between $20,000 and $30,000.

Library curators are working with Boston Police to determine if any crime was committed.

The library has about 30 prints by Rembrandt and 105 by Durer.
