Bodies of 2 Detroit children found in freezer

DETROIT -- The bodies of two children were found inside a freezer in an apartment building, CBS Detroit reports.

The gruesome discovery was made late Tuesday morning when a court officer went to serve an eviction notice at a unit in Detroit's Martin Luther King Apartments.

Detroit police Chief James Craig said the children -- a boy and his older sister -- were 11 and 14 years old.

Craig said the bodies were "inside of a plastic bag (and) appeared to be frozen."

A tip from a neighbor helped police to identify the children's mother, who was not at the scene when the bodies were found.

"So, from that information from that community member we responded and detained her for further investigation," Craig said.

Craig said the mother is a person of interest in the case, which is being investigated as a double homicide. The woman has two other children. They were taken into protective custody.

It's not yet clear how the victims died. Police have not yet released the names of the victims or their mother.
