Bob's Blog: Immigration showdown
WASHINGTON (CBS News) -- Citing Congress's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform, President Obama on Thursday announced new executive actions to address the millions of undocumented immigrants illegally living in the United States.
But this step is only the beginning of a major showdown in Washington. Top Republicans are accusing President Obama of overstepping his legal authority and granting amnesty to immigrants who broke the law to get here.
Will Republicans find a way to stop President Obama's actions? This Sunday, on "Face the Nation," we'll talk to key lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including House Homeland Security Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., and Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho.
Plus, with the Ferguson grand jury decision expected to hand down its decision on whether to indict Officer Darren Wilson this weekend, we'll talk with NAACP President Cornell William Brooks. What is his message to the people of Ferguson and the broader African American community? What lessons can Americans learn from Michael Brown's shooting this summer and subsequent unrest? And what more can be done to prevent violence in the wake of the grand jury's decision?
Finally, we have a great panel lined up Sunday, which includes Susan Page of USA Today, David Ignatius and Michael Gerson of the Washington Post, Mark Leibovich of The New York Times Magazine and Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune. There's a lot of news to cover Sunday. We hope you'll join us.
