Bob Dole jokes he's running for president again
Former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole joked on Wednesday that he would join the growing Republican field of 2016 presidential candidates.
"I thought this would be a good place to announce my candidacy for president," he said during his remarks at an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of V-J Day. The 92-year-old Dole quipped, "Some people thought I should wait until I got a little older but... Anyway, I still want a recount but that probably won't happen."
Dole is an old hand when it comes to White House bids. He tried unsuccessfully to be former President Gerald Ford's vice presidential nominee in 1976 and vied for the presidentical nomination in 1980, losing to former President Ronald Reagan, and 1988, losing out to former President George. H.W. Bush. He finally managed to secure the GOP nomination in 1996 at the age of 73, but lost to former President Bill Clinton in a three-way race that included Reform Party candidate Ross Perot.
