Ben Affleck to star in stand-alone "Batman" film

Ben Affleck will direct and star in a stand-alone "Batman" film, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Affleck, 42, will also take the Batmobile for a spin in the 2016 film, "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." The actor is inheriting the role from Christian Bale, who played the superhero in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy.

Affleck will co-write the film with Geoff Johns, comics writer and chief creative officer for DC Entertainment.

The actor, who recently announced his divorce from Jennifer Garner, is slated to appear at the Warner Bros. San Diego Comic-Con panel presentation on Saturday, joining "Dawn of Justice" director Zack Snyder, Superman actor Henry Cavill and Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, along with fellow castmembers Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter.
