Ore. college football player faces murder charge

SALEM, Ore. -- A college student is a suspect in the murder of a 66-year-old man in Oregon, police said on Wednesday, reports CBS Sacramento.

Beau Smith, 22, a senior wide receiver on the Willamette University football team, is being held on a charge of murder.

Michael Hampshire, 66, was found dead in Salem, Ore. early Wednesday morning. Smith was interviewed by authorities later that day and arrested.

CBS Sacramento sources say a man believed to be Smith waved down a patrolman a few blocks from the scene, raised his arms and said, "I need help, I was in a fight."

The university released a statement saying they are cooperating fully with the investigation.
