Cops: Suspect killed by deputies after shooting woman, throwing her body from car

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Authorities in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Monday released the identities of the attacker and victim in an incident in which a man fatally shot a woman, threw her body out of a car and then was killed in a shootout with sheriff’s deputies.

April Peck, 30, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday night, according to Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Hicks said Peck was killed by Terrell Walker, 48, who died after a shootout with sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies said Walker shot Peck Sunday afternoon and threw her out of a car. Walker was Peck’s live-in boyfriend, authorities told CBS affiliate WAFB.

After a group of good Samaritans and emergency personnel stopped to help the woman, Walker returned according to deputies, running over two people, including a 17-year-old EMT-in-training. He then stepped from his vehicle and opened fire, wounding an emergency responder. The gunman then drove off, crashing into an ambulance as he fled. 

Hicks said all of those injured are expected to recover.

Walker was spotted walking several hours later. Police say the suspect refused to show his hands and then fired on officers. Deputies say they then returned fire and he was killed in the gun battle.

Under a standing agreement with the sheriff’s office, the Louisiana State Police will investigate the shooting of the suspect.

State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said a final report will be turned over to District Attorney Hillar Moore III, whose office will determine whether the shooting was legally justified.
