Baltimore police: Woman raped, shot in head

BALTIMORE -- Police in Baltimore say a woman is in serious condition after she was forced into an alley by a masked man, raped and then shot in the head.

Police spokesman T. J. Smith said Monday morning that investigators believe the attacker may be responsible for other sexual assaults in the community in recent years.

Police say the woman told investigators that a man walked past her on North Carey Street on Saturday night, then doubled back and forced her into an alley and rear of a vacant house. She told police that the man in a ski mask raped and shot her.

Smith says the 20-year-old woman's attacker "essentially left her for dead, but she's fighting."

He says it looks like the woman will survive.
