Arrest in stabbing death of Long Island teen

HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. -- A New York man is being held without bail in connection with the stabbing death of 18-year-old Maggie Rosales on Long Island, reports CBS New York.

Adam Saalfield, of Huntington Station, N.Y., was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder. Rosales was found stabbed in the neck Oct. 12, lying face down on a Huntington Station street, police said.

Prosecutors say they have a strong case, including DNA evidence linking the suspect to the murder, as well as security video.

Saalfield was arraigned Thursday. An emotional scene in the courtroom erupted when one of the victim's relatives stood up and yelled, "Murderer! Animal!"

Outside the courthouse, the victim's uncle called Saalfield a predator, and Rosales' father is thanking police for catching Saalfield and bringing him to court, CBS radio station WINS reported.

Defense attorney John LoTurco said in a statement that Saalfield, "claims he had no relationship with the victim and no motive to commit such a brutal crime."

Rosales' murder was the fourth unsolved homicide in Huntington Station in a year.

In July, a 25-year-old man was shot in the head on the street; in June, a 38-year-old man was stabbed to death, and in October 2013, the body of a 23-year-old woman was discovered near a walking path in a nature preserve.

The deaths have many residents in town of 33,000 demanding a stronger police presence.
