Ariana Grande: What I learned from the doughnut-licking incident
Ariana Grande said she's learned a lot since that doughnut-licking/"I hate Americans" incident earlier this year.
The pop star had apologized in multiple statements and interviews before, but in her first interview since the fiasco she called her behavior "very offensive." And she had a few takeaways from the situation, which was caught on surveillance video.
"My behavior was very offensive and I apologized," Grande said Tuesday on "Good Morning America." "There's no excuse or there's nothing to justify it. But you know, I think as human beings we all say and do things that we don't mean at all sometimes.
"I think one of the biggest things I learned from that was what it feels like to disappoint so many people who love and believe in you. And that's an excruciating feeling. And you have to remember that your words, your actions, have, you know, ramifications and you have to really think about what you're about to say and do because it's important. It's important to so many people," she added.
In July, security camera video, obtained by CBS2 in Los Angeles, shows Grande spitting on and licking doughnuts sitting atop a glass case at Wolfee Donut Shop in Lake Elsinore, California. She and a friend seem to be taking turns spitting on the baked goods when they apparently thought no one was looking. In the same video, Grande could be heard saying that she hates both Americans and America, just as a shop employee is seen bringing out trays of large doughnuts.
In her initial apology, the "Problem" singer had said her doughnut shop comments stemmed from being an advocate of healthy eating.
"I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole," she said.
