Anti-Trump "Impeach 45" clothing sparks outcry and "boycott Walmart" campaign
Walmart said it would stop selling "Impeach 45" apparel online, which sparked outrage and a "boycott Walmart" campaign in support of the 45th president, Donald Trump. The retail giant has been selling "Impeach 45" baby onesies and men's T-shirts, both made by the apparel company Old Glory, on its website.
Various items that echo the same anti-Trump sentiment were also available on Walmart's website, including other T-shirts, bumper stickers and coffee mugs made by several companies.
Trump advocate Ryan Fournier brought attention to the controversial apparel on Twitter, CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reports.
Fournier tweeted at Walmart about the items, writing: "Why are you selling Impeach 45 baby clothes on your website????? What kind of message are you trying to send?"
His post has been retweeted more than 6,000 times, and other people took to Twitter to express their distaste for the shirts.
Some used a "boycott Walmart" hashtag, sparking a campaign to ditch the retail giant. The anti-Walmart campaign has grown among some users, but many others have come to Walmart's defense.
One person pointed out that the company also was also selling clothing made by various vendors for people who oppose Mr. Trump's opponent in the 2016 presidential election, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former President Obama. Pro-Trump apparel was also available on the Walmart website.
Walmart said the "Impeach 45" items "were sold by third party sellers on our open marketplace, and were not offered directly by Walmart."
"We're removing these types of items pending review of our marketplace policies," a representative for Walmart said via email.
