Angelina Jolie made honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II

Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her humanitarian work.

The actress, director and U.N. special envoy was presented with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George during an audience with the queen at Buckingham Palace on Friday in London.

She received the honorary damehood for services to U.K. foreign policy and her work campaigning to end war zone sexual violence.

The title is the female equivalent to honorary knighthood. Because Jolie is not a British citizen, she's not entitled to use "Dame" before her name.

"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," she said back in June, of learning of the award. "Working on [the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative] and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."
