Three K.C. teens killed girl, 14, at water park, cops say
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three teenagers have been charged in the murder of a 14-year-old girl at a Kansas City water park, reported CBS affiliate KCTV.
Alexis Kane, an eighth-grader, was found dead on Jan. 11, not far from her middle school. Three teenagers -- two 17-year-olds and Dominic McDaniel, age 18 -- are accused of brutally beating and taking turns shooting her.
All three have been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, according to the station. Prosecutors have requested that each defendant be held on cash bond of $500,000.
According to court documents and surveillance videos, the victim got into a car with two of the suspects at a 7-11 convenience store.
Her friends said she had arranged to meet with one teen through Facebook messages, and while they told her not to get into the vehicle, when she did, they followed her. After losing sight of her, Kane's friends told her to to turn on her cellphone's location services, according to court documents.
The teen suspects went to an apartment -- leaving afterwards -- and headed towards the water park, according to the CBS affiliate.
Surveillance video from the park shows that one of the teens allegedly hit the victim in the face with a handgun and then the others passed the gun around, shooting her multiple times.
Multiple 9mm shells were found at the scene, according to court records.
Police say it took over 100 local and federal officers to find the suspects.
"There is just no sense to this. I can't give you a motive. It's senseless. A 14-year-old is no longer with us. I cannot give you a reason that makes any sense," Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker told KCTV.
The victim's family told the station they can begin to heal, now that the three suspects have been captured and charged.
"She didn't deserve it, and we all know that," her mother, LoShonda Kane, told the station. "She will be missed so much by many."
"I ask all mothers please protect your children," she added.
