Alberto Gonzales on backing Donald Trump : “I’m still evaluating”
Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday that he hasn’t decided whether to support GOP nominee Donald Trump in November.
“I’m still evaluating Donald — well, because he shifts positions from time to time,” Gonzales said during an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “I don’t know Donald Trump, I don’t think I’ve ever met Donald Trump, so I think being able to know someone takes some time.”
Gonzales added that since several people he trusts aren’t backing Trump, “what it tells me is I need to study this man very very closely.”
Asked about Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants, calling them “rapists” and “drug dealers,” Gonzales said a president must be very careful about his or her choice of words because of the power and resonance the presidency holds.
“There are consequences to words when a president makes a statement, and I talk about that in the book -- once a president makes a statement it’s very, very difficult to walk that back. So I think someone in the Oval Office has to be very careful about the words they say because there are consequences and quite frankly there should be consequences.”
