Ex-boyfriend in custody in case of slain NYC correction officer

NEW YORK CITY -- The ex-boyfriend of an off-duty New York City correction officer who was shot to death while sitting in her car Dec. 4 has been arrested in connection with her death, reports CBS New York.

Police say 25-year-old Alastasia Bryan was shot while sitting in the driver’s seat of her car parked near her home in the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn. Bryan was headed to her job at Rikers Island jail at the time of the killing. She had worked at the facility for a month.

In surveillance video released by the NYPD, a man can be seen walking up to Bryan’s car and firing five shots. Bryan cannot be seen in the video. Officers say they found her with gunshot wounds to her head and torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Keon Richmond, 33, was arrested in Brooklyn on Wednesday by the New York/New Jersey regional fugitive task force, the station reports. He was found hiding in a basement closet, officials said.

The NYPD told CBS News’ Crimesider that Richmond hasn’t been charged and the investigation remains open. They didn’t say whether he’s considered a suspect or person of interest in the case.

Detectives have said they believe Bryan was likely the intended target of the shooting.  A motive remains unclear.
