Airlines still see mass cancellations in wake of blizzard

Airports in the New York City and Washington, D.C., areas were likely to remain at least partially closed Sunday as people dug out from a massive blizzard that shut down the East Coast over the weekend. So far the total number of flights cancelled due to the storm has topped 11,000.

Even as United Airlines said limited service might begin later in the afternoon in New York City, airports in the Washington D.C. area were likely to remain closed Sunday, and other airlines started to cut Monday service in addition to the 7,000 already-canceled weekend flights.

Flightaware reports airlines have already cancelled 3,359 flights for Sunday and already 635 flights Monday. That's a total of 11,605 flights across the four day period beginning Friday.

LaGuardia airport in Queens, N.Y., was the worst hit, with 669 cancellations. On a percentage basis, BWI airport in Baltimore had the most cancellations, with 79 percent of total flights shut down, according to Flightaware.
