8 kids hurt by fallen tree at Calif. children's museum
PASADENA, Calif. -- Authorities say eight children were hurt, two critically, when a large tree fell Tuesday near a Southern California children's museum.
The pine tree, which is dozens of feet tall, uprooted around 5 p.m. outside the entrance to the Kidspace Children's Museum near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
All eight victims suffered blunt force trauma, Pasadena Fire spokesperson Lisa Derderian told CBS Los Angeles.
Derderian said two children were critically injured and five others had minor injuries. Two young children could be seen strapped to gurneys by paramedics.
The incident occurred at the end of a summer camp day, while children were waiting to be picked up by parents, according to Kidspace Marketing Manager Tim Scheidler. The camp has 33 children enrolled, all of whom have been accounted for.
"There were some injuries at the time of the incident but all Kidspace staff, campers, volunteers, and guests were accounted for," the museum said in a statement released Tuesday evening. "Emergency services were immediately called and arrived on the scene shortly after."
A search and rescue team, firefighters and police officers cut and tore limbs from the tree as they searched for people who may have been trapped.
A spokesperson for the City of Pasadena, William Boyer, told CBS News the area where the tree fell was being watered.
