Andy's inauguration trivia

In January 2009, as the country was making preparations to inaugurate Barack Obama as the first African-American president of the United States, 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney looked back at other inaugural firsts.

In the video above, Rooney points out the first president to ride in a car at his inauguration, the first inauguration to be broadcast on radio, and the first to appear on television. He recalls the longest inauguration -- a four-hour affair consisting of floats, elephants, and 73 bands.

He also remembers “one of the coldest days Washington ever had,” when a president was sworn in during a frigid 7 degrees on Pennsylvania Avenue, and the inauguration he must have attended but doesn’t remember.

“Some things you’d rather forget,” he said.
